WDAM Viewpoint- Memorial Day 2012

Monday is Memorial Day.  Many have the day off.  Most will spend the time with family and friends cooking out, watching TV, or engaging in whatever their favorite pastimes happen to be.  That's good.  In today's fast paced world—we all need a break.  For those who have lost loved ones during one of our nation's wars or military conflicts…Monday will take on a different meaning.  It will be a holiday with someone missing.  There will be an empty place at the table, or wherever friends and family gather.  There will be an empty place in the hearts of all who cared for them.  Those who haven't lost a close one will probably give the real meaning of the holiday a second thought…and that's a shame.  Our wonderful freedoms and this great country we enjoy was made possible and remains in place because of those who gave life and limb to ensure our safety and way of life.  Take a moment…or more appropriately, take a knee…sometime during the day to honor the lives of those as Abraham Lincoln so simply and eloquently put it speaking of those that " who gave their last full measure of devotion that—we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people…shall not perish from the Earth."  I'm Jim Cameron.  Thank you to all who have and do serve—and to all who have given loved ones on behalf of this great land.
