HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hattiesburg and Youth Challenge Cadets have teamed up to pay special tribute to veterans who've passed away.

Saturday morning, they placed about 3,000 American flags on the graves of veterans at Highland, Roseland Park and Oaklawn cemeteries.  It's done every year as part of Memorial Day weekend.

"It's a sign of respect to honor our veterans to give them the respect that they deserve for fighting for our country," said Christopher Warden, a Youth Challenge cadet.

Another Youth Challenge cadet, Aaron Jones, had this to say. "I'm out here honoring these people. They've done what they need to for their country. They deserve the respect of not just me, but all Americans."

The flags will remain on the graves for one week. More than one dozen youth challenge cadets participated.
