Jones County Click it or Ticket

The Jones County Sheriff's Department launched "Click It or Ticket" May 21 until June 3, in order to increase safety belt usage.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2010 nationally, 61% of the 10,647 passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes overnight were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the fatal crash, compared to 42% during the daytime hours.

That's why The Jones County Sheriff's Department is joining with other State and local law enforcement and highway safety officials for an aggressive national "Click It or Ticket" mobilization to crack down on safety belt law violators in hopes of reducing fatalities.

"The Jones County Sheriff's Department Patrol Division will be conducting safety checkpoints throughout Jones County both day and night, yet this week alone they have written several seat belt violations," according to Sheriff Alex Hodge.

Captain Jerry Hutcheson with the Special Operations Division said, "Research reveals that regular safety belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes." He also noted that fatal crashes can and do happen every day which is why the Patrol Division will be out in force showing zero tolerance for anyone not buckled up.
