Laurel Safety and Health Fair addresses senior safety

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

A Senior Safety Health Fair and prescription drug drop off event took place Friday at the Sawmill Square Mall in Laurel.

The event was sponsored by the TRIAD Organization of Jones County. TRIAD is made up of members of law enforcement in the county and seniors in the community. They use a S.A.L.T. or Seniors and Law Enforcement team approach to reduce crime against seniors and to help make them safer in their homes.

Several different organizations were on hand at the fair with information for the seniors like how to detect scams, who to call when different types of emergencies happen in the home, and tools they can use to make their homes safer.

"Sometimes the seniors are locked in their homes from day to day and have no family to care for them," said Debra Warren, Victims Assistance Coordinator, Jones County District Attorneys Office. "It is so important for seniors to have the information they need to keep themselves safe."

A collection box was set up at for the seniors to discard their old prescriptions.
