Southern Miss survives Houston 8-7 in extra innings

PEARL, MS (WDAM) -

History nearly repeated itself. After giving up nine runs in the seventh against Memphis on Wednesday, the Golden Eagles surrendered two leads in the seventh and ninth innings, but managed to hold off Houston 8-7 in ten innings in the Conference USA Tournament on Thursday.

With one out, and the winning run represented at the plate, freshman pitcher Bradley Roney managed to shake off a wild pitch that scored one of two runs for Houston in the bottom of the ninth, and got two Cougars to fly out.

Up 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Southern Miss surrendered four runs that allowed Houston to tie the game. After retaking a 7-5 lead, the Black and Gold, again, allowed the Cougars to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth to force the extra-inning affair.

Southern Miss will have Friday off and will play Rice on Saturday.
