Purvis wins 4A state championship

JACKSON, MS (WDAM) -

For the first time since 2005, the Purvis High School baseball team are state champions. The Tornadoes defeated Lewisburg 3-2 at Smith Wills Field in Jackson Wednesday evening to claim the title.

It's the fourth championship for Purvis Head Coach Tony Farlow, and his third with the Tornadoes, but he says this one might be the sweetest. "This might be the most special one ever. I don't know," said Farlow following his team's win.

"We've played close games all year. You know, you've been tense all year, your stomach's been in knots all year, and to finally finish the deal, it's really special."

Purvis opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when senior John Ross McElhenney skied a shot to deep left field. The sac fly brought in classmate Lloyd Lambeth, and Purvis led 1-0. Another sac fly from senior Logan Farrell in the bottom of the third inning made the score 2-0.

Lewisburg struck back with two runs in the top of the fourth, before the Tornadoes ultimately took the lead for good the very next inning.

Purvis claimed the victory in game three of the championship series, after Lewisburg evened the series up with a 10-3 win last Friday. Purvis won the opening game 5-3.
