HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - More than 50 veterans of the Korean War were honored by the Dept. of Defense, the African-American Military History Museum and the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum during a ceremony at the Lake Terrace Convention Center Tuesday morning.

Each of the veterans was presented with a certificate of appreciation.

"You sometimes think you are forgotten, but something like this says, no you're not forgotten," said William K. "Bubby" Massengale, a Korean War veteran from Hattiesburg.

"I feel very appreciated today," said Alfred Branch, Jr., another Korean War veteran from Hattiesburg.

The veterans were also addressed by representatives of the Dept. of Defense and Maj. Gen. Augustus L. Collins, Mississippi's Adjutant General.

"The one thing that I take away from the Korean War veterans is their pride in what they did and that gives me pride in my service to my country," Collins said. "They are tremendous role models for all the men and women who serve," he said.

Ceremonies like this are being held across the nation, in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. Tuesday's event was the first to take place in Mississippi.
