Authorities attempting to calm prison riot in Natchez

NATCHEZ, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

PRESS RELEASE

Facility staff, along with local and state law enforcement officials and officials from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) are in the process of quelling an inmate disturbance at the Adams County Correctional Facility that began at approximately 2:40 p.m.. Currently, the inner compound and portions of housing units are the focus of remaining efforts to quell the disturbance.  The disturbance is contained within the secure perimeter of the facility, with no threat to public safety. Law enforcement officials are providing outside perimeter security as facility staff and management work to resolve the incident inside the facility.

Five employees have been transported to a local hospital for treatment of various injuries. Additional staff are being treated for injuries onsite. One inmate has been transported offsite for treatment of unspecified injuries.

In response to the incident, the facility's trained Special Operations Response Team (SORT) has been activated. Additional SORT teams from other CCA facilities have also been activated and are en route to the facility to support Adams staff. Law enforcement agencies providing outside perimeter security and other support services include Adams County Sheriff's Department and Mississippi State Highway Patrol.

Additional Information such as the cause of the incident is pending investigation, which will occur once the disturbance has been resolved. Updates will be provided as they become available.

The Adams County Correctional Facility is a 2,567-bed prison owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). The facility houses adult male criminal aliens for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

    The University of Southern Mississippi ended Saturday’s regular-season baseball finale at Marshall University the same way it started, with a bang. The 18th-ranked Golden Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in both the second and ninth innings, scoring eight runs in each, as USM finished off a first-ever sweep of the Thundering Herd on its home turf with a 18-9 victory at Epling Stadium.

    A man is recovering from injuries after he claims he was beaten by officers with the Laurel Police Department. Thirty-six-year-old James Barnett indicated the incident took place on Tuesday, May 15.
