BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ashley Graeter collected a go-ahead triple in the top of the ninth as Southern Miss scored 10 unanswered runs to come-from-behind and beat UAB 11-5 here Friday night at Young Memorial Field.
The Golden Eagles improved to 29-23 on the season and 13-10 in C-USA play, evening the series at one-game apiece. The two teams complete the series with a 1 p.m., contest Saturday.
Dillon Day had four hits for the Golden Eagles as they scored double-digit runs for the first time since April 7. Blake Brown added a pair of doubles, while Bradley Roney delivered two hits and drove in three runs, while Joe Martin also added two hits and two RBI in a reserve role.
Down 5-1 in the eighth, Brown started the comeback with a two-run double before Roney – who was pinch hitting – singled to the pitcher and was thrown down into the corner to score a run Brown from second. Martin, who was pinch hitting as well, singled to left to tie the game at 5-5.
Southern Miss then exploded for six runs in the top of the ninth. Day led off the final frame with a walk. After a sacrifice by Michael Sterling, Graeter tripled to center knocking home Day. Mason Robbins then singled home Graeter before Roney cleared the bases with a three-run double. Martin then finished the scoring with a RBI single from Martin.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early advantage. Dillon Day led off with a triple to centerfield and then scored one batter later when Michael Sterling tallied an infield single to knock in day.
UAB, though, quickly took the lead in the bottom of the frame. With one out John Frost singled to right. After a flyout, USM starter Jake Drehoff hit Patrick Palmeiro with a pitch. Ryan Ussery then connected on a Drehoff pitch to right-center, scoring both Frost and Palmeiro.
The Blazers (29-26, 9-14) added three more runs in the fifth inning to pull away in the contest. Ivan De Jesus collected an RBI double and Patrick Palmeiro then hit a two-run homer, his fourth, to left to make the score 5-1.
USM reliever Cameron Giannini threw 3 2/3 innings in relief to get the victory and improve to 3-3. Giannini allowed a run on three hits and a walk, while Roney threw a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.
UAB closer Ryan Nance allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks over the fina 1 2/3 to suffer the loss and fall to 3-3.
