Old Dominion announces it will join Conference USA

There's finally some good news for Conference USA, who will be losing a lot of its big-name programs in the near future. The conference will welcome Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va, effective July 1, 2013, as officially announced by the school on Thursday.

ODU spent the last 21 years in the Colonial Athletic Association, and has to pay a quarter of a million dollars to leave the conference. In addition, the Monarchs will have to give up $400,000 in revenue distribution.

Conference USA faithful should expect a solid addition to basketball competition. The Monarchs have made the post-season the last eight consecutive years, and entering this season, won the most games, 173, out of all Division I schools in Virginia.

The football program, on the other hand, has a ways to go. The Monarchs played only their third season of football ever, and against Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division II) competition. The football program, however, will not start competing with Conference USA opponents until 2015.
