HPD team renovates home for woman in need

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

On 308 East Florence Street in East Hattiesburg, cops were not being cops today; they were contractors.

"I'm trying to teach these guys how to paint," said Hattiesburg Police Lieutenant Dale Bounds.

"We're doing a community service project for one of our less fortunate citizens who was in an unfortunate accident and can't really fend for herself," HPD's Captain Terrence Bullock.

On the job, Hattiesburg Strike Team officers are plugged in - they talk to people and get to know many residents pretty well. And when someone needs help, sometimes they can do just that.

"We received information that this lady had some issues with a guy come in and didn't complete her house," says Bounds.

Not only did she have bad luck with a contractor, she is now toughing it out in the hospital - disabled, and on dialysis. When she is not there, she is at home with her daughter in her nearly unlivable home.

"So right now we're actually going in and renovating her house for her," said Bullock, "Doing some things that she needs done to improve her quality of living.

The job includes sanding throughout the house, painting, window repairs, scraping floors, installing new light switches and even patching up large holes in the walls.

Nine special forces officers are sweating it out for a full, hot Tuesday, applying what they know about home improvements - and supplies donated from Marvin's Building Supplies - because, they say, their job isn't just to watch over the community.. It's to take care of it.

If somebody's in need, we're going to try to help them out any way we can," said Bounds.

And it's interesting to note that there's no calendar or community service quota these officers have to meet.. It could be a couple times a year or once a month.. When they hear about a project that needs a little push.. They schedule it, and take it upon themselves.
