HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A few dozen Pine Belt residents gathered in Hattiesburg Thursday night to honor victims of violent crime and promote victims' rights. The first, Walk, Run and Roll for Justice at the Longleaf Trace was in recognition of National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

It featured a brief walk along the Trace, followed by a balloon release and a candlelight vigil.

"We want to make sure that everybody who has been victimized by violent crime understands what they're entitled to and what their rights are," said Kim Newell, director of the Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention.

Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge and Hal Kittrell, district attorney for the 15th Judicial District, also attended the event.
