Someone quipped to me that USM is obviously a strong believer in recycling. For the 2nd time since stepping down after 22 years as President of Southern Miss, Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas is coming back as interim president to fill the vacancy created last week when Dr. Martha Saunders resigned. He did the same after the Late Dr. Horace Fleming left a number of years ago. In between he has not only served as President Emeritus but has continued to teach classes and filled in for several months as the interim commissioner of the State Institutions of Higher learning. This state is fortunate indeed to have an educator of the caliber and character of Aubrey Lucas back in the saddle again. He has devoted his life to higher education in Mississippi and has built a legacy that will probably never be matched. At a time when most would want little more than a well deserved rest, Dr. Lucas keeps going like the "Energizer Bunny" in a bowtie. To know the man is to respect him. Not only is he a brilliant and highly experienced educator—he is one of the most likeable and positive people one is likely to meet in this life. We would like to thank Dr. Lucas on behalf of all who love the University of Southern Mississippi for all you've done and all you continue to do.
