William Carey Softball wins SSAC Championship over Auburn-Montgomery

PRESS RELEASE FROM WILLIAM CAREY UNIVERSITY

Columbus, GA- Freshman Alli McCaleb fired a four hit shutout as No. 6 William Carey defeated No. 18 Auburn Montgomery, 3-0 to capture the 2012 Southern States Athletic Conference Championship.

With the win WCU clinches a spot in the 2012 NAIA National Tournament held in Gulf Shores, AL on May 17-23. This will be the Lady Crusaders  fifth straight appearance in the national tournament.

WCU had a chance earlier in the afternoon to clinch the title however four errors  led to seven unearned runs as they fell to AUM, 8-6 to setup the winner take all game.

In the deciding game the freshman from Long Beach was stellar in the circle scattering four hits and striking out three. Carey struck in the first inning as Hannah Cook-Kelly ripped a two out triple and Jasmine Shelby followed with an RBI single to put WCU up 1-0. Carey  added to the lead in the fourth as Kailtyn Perry ripped a two run single to put Carey in front 3-0.

AUM threatened in the seventh inning getting a pair of singles but McCaleb struck out Kacie Ryal to end the game.
