The Mississippi chapter of a service organization which promotes the ideals of the U.S. Marine Corps is holding its state convention in Hattiesburg for the first time. The Marine Corps League has been meeting in the Hub City since Friday to elect new officers and conduct other business.

They're also hosting a banquet Saturday night on the Southern Miss campus.

The Mississippi Department was chartered just a few years ago and they have nearly 400 members across the state.

"This is actually our second state convention," said Patrick Tutor, commandant for the Mississippi Dept. of the Marine Corps League.

"We had detachments here, but we never had a department. In 2000, we finally chartered a department here in the state and we've grown from three detachments to nine," said Tutor.

"We put in a bid to have it," said Clifton Addison of Hattiesburg, who served as the convention chairman. "It was between us and Jackson and they elected us to have it here in Hattiesburg. We're just so glad to have it here," Addison said.

Sunday, the organization will host a memorial service for fallen Marines.
