JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

The six horses and one burro rescued from a property on 532 near Hot Coffee are now ready for adoption.

The Covington County Sheriff's Department with help from Hub City Horse Haven and the Southern Pines Animal Shelter seized the animals in January. All were severely malnourished and showed signs of abuse.

The animals were taken in by Laura and Gary Sheppard of Ovett who nursed them back to health. Three have already been adopted, one is in foster care, and the other two along with the burro are in the care of the Sheppards.

"If they call me, they can come check out the horses and see it it's the right fit," said Laura Sheppard. "There is a fee for the adoption. We've had some donated hay, but most of the expense of caring for the animals has come out of our pockets. We would like to try and recoup some of that so we can help the next ones."|

The burro, who they call Bernie, is getting up in years and will remain with the Sheppards.

To find out about adopting one or more of the horses contact the Sheppards at 601-689-0645.
