LUMBERTON, MS (WDAM) -

A groundbreaking was held Thursday morning for a new independent-living community for seniors in Lumberton.

The 9.5-million-dollar project is located on three and a half acres of land on Camp Avenue  inside the city limits. The community when finished will be for low income seniors over the age of 62.

The 48 unit project is being developed by the South Mississippi Housing Development in partnership with Landmark Development Services.

Amenities on the property will include  a 1500 square foot community center with meeting rooms, a media room, business center, and a leasing office.

"Normally when you have housing built years ago there wasn't any supportive services there," said Demetria Simpson, President and CEO of South Mississippi Housing and Development. "There will be supportive services on the property on a full time basis provided by a health care provider or another organization that provides different types of programs to the seniors today."

The project is expect to take about a year to complete.
