Red Cross holds blood drive at Hattiesburg office

For the first time since before Hurricane Katrina the Hattiesburg office of the American Red Cross held a blood drive at their Hutchinson Street office.

The drive will help to replenish supplies in South Mississippi hospitals and help to ensure patients who need transfusions during April and May receive the blood they need.

Red Cross volunteers and staffers teamed with Blood Services Nurses to draw and process the blood. The Disaster Services Division for South Mississippi partnered with the Blood Services division to make the drive possible.

"We're excited to bring it back here. There's always a need for blood especially with the different disasters with all the spring storms," said Jay Huffstatler, Executive Director, South Mississippi Chapter of the Red Cross. "We are pleased to showcase the need for blood. We know the first blood used is the one on the shelf, so we want to be able to replenish those."

Huffstatler says the plan is to have a blood drive in all South Mississippi branches once a quarter, with the goal being to collect 21 pints of blood per drive.
