Petal pedestrian struck by freight train

A Petal man, Shannon Dwayne Harper, was struck by a freight train as he was crossing the tracks at the 1st Ave. intersection in Petal Tuesday morning. PETAL, MS (WDAM) - A Petal man was sent to the hospital Tuesday after being struck by a freight train.

It happened at the 1st Ave. intersection shortly before noon.

Petal Police say the victim, identified as Shannon Dwayne Harper, 45, was trying to retrieve some tin cans which had just fallen off a cart he was pushing across the tracks when he was hit in the hip area by a passing Norfolk Southern train.

He was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Police say at last report, he was in the intensive care unit in stable condition, suffering from a punctured lung and rib injuries.

    Southern Miss looks to add a Conference USA tournament title to its regular season crown this week in Biloxi. The Golden Eagles (39-15, 23-6 C-USA) open tournament play against UAB on Wednesday at 4 p.m. inside MGM Park. "Certainly, this tournament it's no different than a regional atmosphere, that's what it's about,” said USM head coach Scott Berry.
