Watson: Team coming back "will be better than the previous team"

Better than 25-9? Better than an NCAA tournament appearance? Better than a team that just rode through the most successful season in Southern Miss school history? That's exactly how Neil Watson feels.

Watson went even further as to say a trip to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, or even Final Four could be in the Golden Eagles' future. "We feel like that team, and that charisma is coming back," said the rising junior guard. In saying that, Watson also shared that no one, including himself, is thinking of transferring, despite former head coach Larry Eustachy deciding to take over Colorado State's program.

"Everybody is planning on coming back next season," said Watson, "Everybody's working, doing individuals, group work-outs, weights, we've all stuck together through this whole situation.

"We know why he left, but we're going to stay here. It's not just about players and coaches. We're also here to play for the city of Hattiesburg as well...Even through the confusing situation for my teammates and myself right now, we're making it through, and we're looking to the future right now."

The future may very well include now Southern Miss assistant coach Steve Barnes taking over the reigns from his predecessor, whom he coached under for the past eight seasons. The move, if made, would certainly have the approval of the team.

"We're definitely supportive of Coach Barnes," Watson said, "We feel, in our own best interest as players to have a system that we're comfortable with, that we've worked so hard to be good at, that offense, that defense, Coach Barnes would definitely be a good candidate for it."
