Exclusive: Southern Miss A.D. choice could come by week's end

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The USM search committee has completed its interviews with candidates for the athletic director's job, and a decision on Richard Giannini's replacement could come by the end of the week.

Sources tell 7 On Your Side that members of the search committee along with University President, Martha Saunders, met with the five finalists for the job in Dallas Friday and then voted on who they think should be the next A.D.  We are told the top two finalists are interim A.D. Jeff Hammond and current Appalachian State athletic director Charlie Cobb.

As was the case with the hiring of football coach Ellis Johnson, the final decision will be made by Dr. Saunders. The decision to name a new A.D. soon may coincide with the search for a new basketball coach, since Larry Eustachy is now the coach at Colorado State University.

News Seven is told interviews for a new basketball coach could start as early as this weekend. In addition, the State College Board meets later this week in Jackson and while the IHL board has no say in who is hired, the board does have to approve the contract.
