HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A new adoption center is now open at the Southern Pines Spay and Neuter Clinic.

An open house will be held Monday evening at the clinic's new location on Hardy Street to show off the new center and celebrate the Southern Pines Animal Shelter's 6oth anniversary. The center was incorporated in April of 1952 as the Forrest County Humane Society. The name was later changed to reflect the much larger area served by the organization.

The new adoption area was funded by a donation by a private foundation. It features a large glassed in area for kittens and a separate area with cages for puppies.

As part of Monday's open house the Greater Pine belt Community foundation will present a check for $3300 to the shelter. The yearly grant comes from an endowment established after the death of the community leader, Doctor Richard Vreeland. The foundation has been donating to the shelter since 2003.
