LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Jones County law officers, city officials and educators are asking for your help in keeping the county free of trash. Saturday, they gathered at the Magnolia Center to kick-off a week's worth of beautification and recycling activities for the "Great American Clean-Up."

That's the country's largest organized effort to keep communities clean.

The Jones County Sheriff's Dept. is leading the charge to pick up litter, along with local municipalities.

Jones County Junior College is also pitching in, by hosting its first community recycle day next Friday.

"This is just a big problem," said Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge. "Not only is it a cost problem because we have to pick the garbage up, it has to be disposed of, but it also is getting into our waterways and our streams," Hodge said.

"Most everything that people throw out is bottles, cans, things that can be recycled, so it's really good, because all that stuff can go somewhere and be re-made into something new," said Kelly Atwood, Eco Bobcat advisor for Jones County Junior College.

The cities of Laurel, Ellisville, Sandersville and Soso will each have a dumpster site where folks can drop off what they've picked up.
