Rep. Steven Palazzo speaks during a change of command ceremony at Camp Shelby Friday morning.
CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -
Congressman Steven Palazzo was among the dignitaries who watched Col. Brad Smith assume command of Camp Shelby during a ceremony at the post Friday morning. Smith takes over for retiring commander Col. Steve Parham, who led the post for three years.
Palazzo said he's concerned about the nation's defense spending, especially in light of a failed rocket launch Friday by North Korea.
"We're definitely glad that the mission was a failure," said Palazzo. "But, it also needs to make us look inwards, because they're spending money to create advanced weapons systems and right now, with the fiscal problems this country is having, we're wanting to balance the budget on the backs of our men and women in uniform. We need to be making increased investments in national defense, not cutting our own defense because of nations like North Korea, like Iran and others," he said.
Palazzo, who's also in the National Guard, will be at Camp Shelby this weekend for required weekend drill.
