Southern Miss holds Children's Book Festival

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Reading, writing, and illustrations were celebrated on the campus of Southern Miss.

Earlier this afternoon some of the world's top children's literature authors and illustrators were honored at the 45th Annual Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival.

Author Jane Yolen received the Southern Miss Medallion, the festival's top award. The annual Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award was presented to Meg Medina,  and the Ezra Jack Keats New Illustrator Award was presented to Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw.

Both Yolen and Kostecki-Shaw said they were honored to receive such renowned titles.

"When the De Grummond calls and says we are giving you the medallion this year what you say is, 'it's for my body of work,'" said Yolen. "They're saying that what I've done with my life, my entire life, has been worthy, and that is huge."

"So, to be recognized and get an award from people that you admire, and especially in the name of Ezra Jack Keats, who I admire so much, and I look to strive for, it's just the biggest reminder to me to just keep following that and just to keep going down the path that I'm going," said Kostecki-Shaw.
