Construction gets underway on new sewer system in Brooklyn

Construction of a new sewer system is set to get underway in the Brooklyn Community in south Forrest County.

The new system will be put in downtown and will serve approximately 85 homes, as well as Forrest County Agricultural High School and South Forrest Elementary. Once finished, it will complete a sanitary service system that was established over 100 years ago.

The community has previously relied on septic tanks, a method that has failed because of the clay soil in the area. This has caused negatives effects on the community with health risks, which has hurt economic and community development and jeopardizes the Black Creek ecosystem.

There will be no connection fee for residences or businesses in the initial phase of the project, making for a savings for each of about $1500.

"It is a project that is funded through federal monies from the Corp of Engineers and the USDA Rural Development and matches from the Forrest County Board of Supervisors to provide a sewer system for the Brooklyn Community," said Chris Bowen, Forrest County District Five Supervisor.

Construction on the system is expected to take about a year.
