Zimmerman launches website, asks for donations

(RNN) - CNN is reporting that the embattled neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman may speak to the media for the first time since the shooting of an unarmed teenager.

Zimmerman's legal team hold a news conference within the hour. However, Zimmerman himself may or may not appear.

Zimmerman made news most recently with a website he launched designed to raise funds for his defense. Zimmerman has admitted to shooting and killing Trayvon Martin, 17, on the night of Feb. 26 in Sanford, FL.

The website titled "The Real George Zimmerman" is asking for donations to help with legal defense fund, as the website says, for the "life altering event which led me to become the subject of intense media coverage."

The background to the website is an American Flag with a link to donate to his defense fund, as well as the headers "The Facts," "My Race," "Album" and "Contact."

"I have created a PayPal account solely linked on this website as I would like to provide an avenue to thank my supporters personally and ensure that any funds provided are used only for living expenses and legal defense, in lieu of my forced inability to maintain employment. I will also personally, maintain accountability of all funds received."

Zimmerman says on the website that media coverage has forced him to "leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately, my entire life. This website's sole purpose is to ensure my supporters they are receiving my full attention without any intermediaries."

Under the heading "The Facts," Zimmerman does not give an account of what happened that night, but states "am grateful to my friends that have come to my aid, whether publicly or personally, never questioning my integrity or actions, understanding that I cannot discuss the details of the event on February 26th, and allowing law enforcement to proceed with their investigation unhindered. Once again, I thank you for your patience and I assure you, the facts will come to light."

Under the link "My Race" is a quote by Thomas Paine, one of the Founding Fathers of the U.S.: "The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion."

Zimmerman's lawyers and a friend confirmed the authenticity of the website to CNN. Frank Taaffe, a friend of Zimmerman's, told CNN sister network HLN that the website does not mean Zimmerman expects to be charged in connection with Martin's death.

The neighborhood watch captain was not arrested for shooting Martin, stating it was self-defense, and has not been charged with a crime. On April 9, the special prosecutor appointed to the case, Angela Cory, announced that a grand jury will not hear the evidence against Zimmerman, and will not determine if an indictment will be made.

Zimmerman does not give an account on his website of what happened the night he shot Martin, but friends and family previously have spoken to the media on his behalf. Attorneys have told CNN that Zimmerman wants to share his side of the story, but cannot because of threats against him and the possibility of criminal charges.
