Columbia Board of Alderman vote to fire police chief

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) -

It was near sunset when Columbia's Board of Alderman returned from their executive session.  Their verdict was in.  The board voted 3-2 Monday night to terminate Police Chief, Jim Kinslow; effective immediately.  His firing though is shrouded in mystery.   The reasons have yet to be released by the board.  Not even Kinslow himself, who came out of retirement for the job, was given a reason when the board originally asked for his resignation.

It all began with a motion made by Ward 1 Alderman, Wendell Hammond, who up until this point could not be reached for comment.  When asked why he made the motion after the meeting, Hammond had this to say, "lawyer's sitting right there."  All questions were then re-directed to City Attorney, Lawrence Hahn.

"The majority of the board determined that the change was necessary at the moment," said Hahn.  When asked why it was necessary, Hahn said, "I have no further comment."

Along with Hammond, Ward 3 Alderman Renee Galloway and Ward 2 Alderman, Cherly Bourne also voted in favor of Kinslow's termination.  Kinslow leaves behind a balanced budget and a crime rate that's decreased by nearly 50% percent.
