Laurel business engulfed in flames

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

A Laurel business specializing in plastic packaging may be a total loss.

McNeely Plastics at 312 E. 15th street in Laurel was fully engulfed in flames by 10 a.m. Monday. By 11 a.m., the fire had been burning for two hours.

Employees told officials a propane tank attached to a forklift exploded, starting the fire. No were injured, and all employees were able to escape. Laurel fighting with tanker support from every Jones County volunteer department.

Emergency Management Director for Jones County Lance Chancellor said the smoke may be toxic, but at this time the cloud is traveling straight up and not out over populated areas. If officials determine there is a risk, an evacuation is possible.

Fire personnel from Laurel Fire Department and several and volunteer fire departments responded to the fire. Every volunteer department in Jones County contributed a tanker to the effort. The county is keeping one tanker on reserve in case of another fire in the area.

    Three days after nearly knocking off Ole Miss, Southern Miss responded with a 58-38 win over Sam Houston State on Friday night at Reed-Green Coliseum. From the 3:16 mark of the second period to the 5:35 mark of the third period, the Lady Eagles went on a 23-0 run to open a 33-16 lead over the Bearkats. USM outrebounded Sam Houston 45-32, thanks in part to junior Megan Brown and senior Jayla King’s pair of double-doubles.
