SEATTLE (RNN) - After winning tickets to the Masters Tournament, a Seattle golf fan went from feeling like he had hit a hole in one to feeling like it was actually a bogey after his dog ate his tickets.
On Saturday, Russ Berkman came home from buying last minute supplies for his trip when he found that his Swiss mountain dog, Sierra, had been more interested in the taste of the tickets than the places they could take her.
"When I walked in the house I noticed that there were a few strings on my hardwood floors that looked to be the strings that were connected to Masters tickets," he told Seattle's Sports Radio KJR.
The ticket box for the Tournament was closed for the weekend. Panicked, Berkman did what any golf fanatic would do - he used hydrogen peroxide to make his dog throw up and tried to salvage the tickets.
"I didn't know what I was going to find," he said.
Berkman painstakingly reconstructed what he could of his four Masters tickets out of the estimated 80 pieces his dog threw up.
"It came out pretty well," he said."We got about 70 percent of all four tickets together. It took about three cocktails deep."
He left Seattle for Myrtle Beach, SC, the first stop on his way to the tournament, on Saturday with no idea as to whether he'd be able to get into the Augusta National Golf Club.
On Monday, he finally reached someone at the ticket office, where he was met with disbelief after using the oldest excuse in history - his dog ate his Masters tickets.
"First he said, 'Are you serious?'" Berkman said. After speaking to his manager, the employee called back and told the golf fan, "'Based on everything you told me, we just need you to send us a fax with your signature saying that this is the case,'" according to Berkman.
The employee told Berkman that he would reprint the tickets.
Berkman won the tickets from the Masters website to watch Wednesday's Masters Tournament practice round back in August 2011. He considers the trip a lifelong dream.
