HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Physicians, staff and administrators at Forrest General Hospital took a brief walk with representatives of the American Heart Association and city officials Wednesday to promote healthy living as part of National Walking Day.

The event encourages people to walk at least 30 minutes a day for better health.

The walk that was scheduled outdoors was moved inside the hospital because of rain.

"Exercise is so important to a daily healthy lifestyle, walking has been proven to be the most effective," said Millie Swan, chief marketing and medical staff services officer at Forrest General Hospital.

"Walking is really the easiest exercise one can do and it only takes a few minutes a day," said Eve Elias, regional director of the American Heart Association.

National Walking Day was also supported by the Pine Belt Wellness Council and the City of Hattiesburg.
