EEOC complaint filed against USM

A former senior associate director of athletics at USM has filed an EEOC complaint against the University alleging she was discriminated against in the hiring of an interim athletic director

Diane Stark, 61, filed the charge after submitting her letter of resignation to the state college board in February. According to her attorney, Kim Chaze, Stark alleges that the university operated a hostile workplace and accused interim athletic director Jeff Hammond of harassment and intimidation. In the compliant, Stark said she and seven other athletic department employees complained to the university and to the IHL about the hostile working environment and misconduct on Hammond's part, but nothing was ever done.

Hammond was named interim athletic director in December of 2011 after A.D. Richard Giannini abruptly announced his retirement. Stark claims she was discriminated against because she was more qualified to become interim director and because the position was never posted. University General Counsel, Jon Mark Weathers, would not comment on the complaint saying it was a personnel issue.

USM is currently conducting a nationwide search to find a permanent successor to Giannini.
