HOUSTON, Texas – Rice scored three runs in the sixth inning to break a deadlock score in leading the Owls to a 6-3 Conference USA victory over Southern Miss here Friday night at Reckling Park.
The Golden Eagles (15-11 overall, 2-2 C-USA) collected six hits in the contest, including two each from Travis Creel and Kameron Brunty.
The Owls took the early lead by putting together four singles in the second inning which gave the home squad an early 2-0 advantage. Rice got their runs on RBI singles from Michael Ratteree and Christian Stringer.
Southern Miss, though, tied the game with a pair of runs of its own in the third. Creel led off the third with a single to right-centerfield and then advanced a base on an infield bunt single from Chase Fowler. After Connor Barron reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners and then went to second on a wild pitch, Dillon Day delivered a two-run single up the middle to tie the game.
Rice then went ahead for good with three runs in the sixth with a two-run single Michael Fuda and then a RBI single from J.T. Chargois.
The Golden Eagles cut the gap with a run-scoring single from Creel in the seventh which scored Brunty, but Rice's Ryan Lewis completed the scoring for the Owls in the eighth with a RBI single.
Rice starter Matthew Reckling (5-0) captured the victory for the Owls (20-8, 3-1) as he allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, while fanning seven. The Owls then got two innings from Taylor Wall and then Tyler Duffey registered the final two outs to earn his third save of the campaign.
Golden Eagle starter Andrew Pierce (3-2) allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts and suffered the loss.
Game two of the series is set for 3:30 p.m. , Saturday.
