Hattiesburg High School hosts archery tournament

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Archers, yes archers, from both Hattiesburg and Oak Grove High School competed in Hattiesburg High's first ever indoor archery tournament on Thursday. While not as visible as football, basketball or baseball, the sport has been sanctioned by the Mississippi High School Activities Association since 2010, and has garnered a lot of interest.

Hattiesburg Director of Athletics Cheyenne Trussell shares that a big reason to hold archery tournaments is to allow students who may not be able to play the three afore-mentioned sports a chance to still be involved with athletics.

"This is a sport that all you need is the skills and the determination in order to work," said Trussell.

Hattiesburg's team is overseen by retired Col. Earnest Dixon, who also heads up the Tigers' JROTC program. "You see a lot of young ladies who can't participate in other sports in archery," he said, "You see a lot of young men who haven't had the opportunity to play basketball, softball, baseball or football.

"It's a skill competition. You either have the skill or you don't." Dixon also shared how many students make it to college by earning scholarships to participate in archery.

The tournament held Thursday was just a warm-up for both Oak Grove and Hattiesburg, who will both compete in the state championships in Jackson beginning next week.
