HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of Hattiesburg-area residents gathered at City Hall Thursday night to show their support for the family of a Florida teenager who was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch captain one month ago.

They participated in the, "My Child is Your Child Call for Justice Rally." It was in honor of the family of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old teen who was shot by George Zimmerman. He's told authorities he acted in self-defense and has not been charged with a crime.

Many of those attending wore hooded sweatshirts...the same type of clothing Trayvon was wearing when he was killed.

"It's about making sure that the Martins know that they are cared for and loved by people even as far away as Hattiesburg," said Kathy Garner, rally organizer.

"I came out to this rally for justice, not only for him, but for other black people, not only blacks, but different races," said Stefanique Roberts of Hattiesburg.

"We want to support the family of Trayvon," said Robin Clark of Moselle. "We're all a human family and we grieve for his loss and hope that justice will be served," Clark said.

During the rally, many people wrote personal messages which will be sent to the Martin family. Others signed a petition asking the Mississippi attorney general to review the state's "Castle Law," which gives home owners the right to use lethal force, if necessary, to protect their home against attack or intrusion without fear of criminal or civil prosecution.
