HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

As part of a pilot school bus safety program, a MDZ Shield has been installed on one of the districts school buses.

The shield is a polyurethane guard that acts as a safeguard in front of the right rear wheels on the bus. It's designed to deflect a child out of the path of the wheels of a moving bus should they fall.

Statistics show the number of fatalities occurring outside the bus are four times greater than inside, with the greatest number caused by the right rear tires.

"The device is made out of a rubber material, so it gives, it doesn't bend, or break and it will just be a deflection," said Andre Barnes, Transportation Director, Hattiesburg Schools. "The child could sustain bruising, but no serious injuries should occur."

The shield is a product of the C. E. White Company of Ohio, long known for their safety products for school buses.
