USM panel talks about "The Help"

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

An academy award-winning movie about race relations in Mississippi during the 1960s was the subject of a panel discussion at Southern Miss Wednesday night. A small group focused on The Help, a film about African-American maids and their relationships with the white families they worked for.

The movie was based on the bestselling novel.

Among the panelists were two women who grew up in Hattiesburg during the 1960s...Chancery Judge Deborah Gambrell and Southern Miss administrator Dr. Frances Lucas.

"It's (the panel discussion) an opportunity for people to say, 'this is where we are, this is where we came from and let's hope this never happens again, this period in our lives,'" said Gambrell.

"This is a magnificently-charged topic and a great book," said Lucas. "I think we need to be talking about it in Mississippi," she said.

The panel was sponsored by USM's Committee on Services and Resources for Women.
