Jones County parents want change in the school's justice system

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Members from the Fanny Mae Hamer Center for Change were in Jones County on Wednesday speaking out against what they call school injustice.

The group's leader Cherraye Oats said too many students in the Jones County School District are being locked up and placed in youth court.

Oats said administrators are using excessive force and mistreating students, causing them to react in a violent manner which forces them to get kicked out of school and placed in youth court for weeks at a time.

Seven On Your Side did pay a visit the school superintendent's office about this matter, but he was in Jackson at a meeting.

We'll continue to follow this story.
