HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Workers using a large industrial crane have erected a new pedestrian bridge over Gordon's Creek.

It's placed at the intersection of High Street and Lurty Avenue and is part of an $880,000 project to connect the Longleaf Trace Rails to Trails to Kamper Park.

Some other work around the bridge, including sidewalks and smaller bridges, has already been completed.

A state matching grant is funding the project.

"This project will connect to the 4th Street project extension and it goes down Gordon's Creek by Hutchinson Avenue, across Gordon's Creek and on to the zoo," said Johnny Dupree, mayor of Hattiesburg.

The state is paying $700,000 and the City of Hattiesburg is providing the remaining $180,000.
