JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A family of four is homeless following a fire that destroyed their home Friday night on Smith Chapel Road near Sandersville.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. a neighbor was passing by the home of Eric and Shanequa Richardson when he noticed the house was on fire. He called 911 and went to the home to see if anyone was inside. Fortunately the family was away on spring break and no one was inside the home.

Firefighters from Sandersville and Rustin fought the blaze for more than three hours, but were unable to save the structure. They were called back to the home at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning because the fire had rekindled.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Jones County Sheriff's Department.
