HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Mississippi Attorney General's office has spearheaded an annual effort to prevent us from becoming victims of identity theft. That office, along with Bancorpsouth and other organizations and state offices have hosted annual community shred days in several Mississippi cities this week.

In Hattiesburg Saturday, dozens of people brought their collections of personal documents to be shredded at no charge at Bancorpsouth at 3101 Hardy Street.

"Scams are on the rise more than ever, people are looking for ways to make that easy buck and stealing your identity is the easiest way for them to do it," said Bridgette Wiggins, deputy director of the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General's office. "So, it's really more important now than ever to protect your personal information and the best way to do that is to shred those documents," Wiggins said.

This was the 6th year for the community shred days.
