Newt Gingrich speaks at JCJC, other candidates to visit state

Officials and security personnel were busy Friday morning at Jones County Junior College preparing for a visit from presidential candidate Newt Gingrich who took the stage with his wife Callista around noon.

Before his stop, Gingrich made stops by the Hilton in Jackson and the State Capitol Thursday morning.

U.S. Senator Rick Santorum will visit Hattiesburg on Sunday. Santorum made an appearance at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum in Jackson at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Mitt Romney visited Pascagoula on Thursday where Gov. Phil Bryant endorsed him. Romney plans to visit Jackson Friday.

Associate Professor of Political Science at The University of Southern Mississippi Mark Wrighton says the appearance from the candidates has everything to do with the 40 delegates the state has to offer up.

"Republicans in the past have used the winner-take-all system, in which the winner of the primary regardless of how big of a percentage they get would get all the states delegates," said Wrighton. "This time, many of the states are dishing out their delegates on the basis of the proportion of the vote that each candidate has gotten, and so that lengthens the process because even if you come in second or third you are still likely to get some delegates from that state."

In 2008, President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made stops in the state. President Bill Clinton also appeared at JCJC in 2008 in support of his wife.
