Golden Eagles Finish Tourney with 5-4 Victory over Auburn

Press Release from

AUBURN, Ala. – Southern Miss strung together three straight doubles in the top of the eighth to score twice and break a deadlock score in a 5-4 victory over Auburn here Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Auburn Tournament at Plainsman Park.

The Golden Eagles improved to 8-4 on the year as they won two of three games during the tournament.

With the score tied at 3-3 with one out in the top of the eighth, Mason Robbins doubled to left-centerfield. Pinch hitter Connor Barron then knocked one off the right-centerfield wall to put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. Travis Creel extended the lead one batter later with a double of his own over the third-base bag to drive home the second run of the frame.

The visiting Eagles found themselves in trouble in the bottom of the inning when the Tigers (7-6) loaded the bases with two outs. Robbins, though, in his first pitching outing as a collegian, came in to strikeout Dan Glevenyak to end the threat.

Auburn then cut the gap in the ninth on a solo home run by Cullen Wacker but Bradley Roney entered the game and retired all three batters he faced to end the game. He registered his first save of the year.

James McMahon, the third of five pitchers for Southern Miss, collected the victory as he walked two and struckout one while not allowing a run or hit over 1 1/3 innings.

Auburn reliever Slade Smith (0-3) took the last loss by allowed a run on two hits over two innings of work.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the second when Blake Brown hit an opposite field homer to right-centerfield. Brown made the score 2-0 in the third when he drew a bases-loaded wall. The Golden Eagles added their final run on a sacrifice fly from Ashley Graeter, who drove home Dillon Day who started the inning with a triple.

The Golden Eagles return home Tuesday when they play host to South Alabama in a 6 p.m., contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
