HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Saturday morning's rainy weather forced an annual Southern Miss outdoor fundraising event indoors for just the second time in 15 years.

The Great Strides Walk for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation took place inside, rather than outside of the Payne Center. But, that was OK with organizers, who still hoped to raise about $35,000 from the event. As always, the walk was held in conjunction with the Cystic Fibrosis Sports Challenge and a silent auction.

"Not only does the money that we're raising in these events go to medical research, it also helps fund the Cystic Fibrosis Care Center," said Renda McGowan, executive director of the Mississippi Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. "That is our only certified, accredited care center that's located in Jackson at the University Medical Center," McGowan said.

The Hattiesburg Great Strides Walk is the first of ten that will be held throughout Mississippi this year.

The fundraising goal for all the walks is $200,000.
