PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

The City of Petal has come up with a new incentive for people with misdemeanor offenses to clear-up their cases. Each Thursday from now until the end of the year will be "Amnesty Day" in Petal.

City officials say on those days, anyone with an outstanding warrant who appears in municipal court will receive a 50 percent discount on their fines.

They'll also be able to get their driver's licenses reinstated.

"You must be able to pay in full when you come in to pay," said Michelle Strebeck, municipal court clerk. "So, it's not to set up a payment plan, because we're giving you a break already. You have to be able to pay your fines in full," she said.

"I think it's good for the city to clear up some old fines, collect that money, clear the books and it's also good for those people to have a chance to clear their record," said Mayor Hal Marx.

He said the city has a backlog of misdemeanor cases that goes back about 10 years.
