HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Nearly 500 students from more than three dozen school districts in South Mississippi competed in the annual Southern Regional Reading Fair Tuesday at the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

Students from kindergarten to high school were judged on individual displays that were created to represent the plot or characters from a particular book.

Winners will go on to compete in a statewide contest in April.

"The goal is to encourage reading," said Mary Walters, coordinator of the event. "The displays should encourage people to read the book that is being depicted," she said.

The fair featured 350 entries.

Shoulder pads and helmets, loud sidelines and, of course, tackling. Saturday had all the signs of a fall Friday night in the Pine Belt – the only difference was the all-female cast that took to San Antonio Field in Hattiesburg.
