Hattiesburg Police Department adds three new officers

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The City of Hattiesburg added to its police department on Monday.

Three officers with nearly 30 years of combined experience were sworn in, and four sergeants and two lieutenants were promoted during the ceremony.

Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny Dupree says adding to the force provides better protection to the city.

"We can continue to do what we have been doing as far as protecting our city," said Dupree. "We have 11 people who are in our academy right now. We keep adding to the ranks that we have and hopefully we will get to that magic number that keeps moving on us. We are closer to it right now, meaning we can patrol a little better, we can hopefully respond even better than we do right now."

The police department is currently eight officers away from being fully staffed.

The new officers are Le-Byron Jackson, David Matos and Jason Scott. Those promoted to sergeant are Tommy Rigsby, Branden McLemore, Vincent Brown, and Stephon Harris. Those promoted to lieutenant are E. Allen Murray, and Shannon Weaver-Harris.
