The Mississippi Attorney General's Office has asked the state supreme court to set an execution date for a Perry County inmate.
The requests asks for the death of Matthew Puckett, 35, on or before March 21.
Puckett was convicted and sentenced to death in 1996 for the sexual assault and beating death of Rhonda Griffis, 28. The mother of two was found dead in her home in the Sunrise Community. She suffered several blows to the head with an ax handle. At the time of the murder, Puckett was a 17-year-old student at Perry County High School.
The Attorney General's Office says Puckett has run out of appeals with Tuesday's refusal by the U.S. Supreme Court to hear more post-conviction claims.
