LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - As of Tuesday evening, the Laurel High Golden Tornado baseball team finally has a field they may call home. Coaches, players, and several members of Laurel's 1989 state championship team officially opened up its new baseball field.
The stadium, which cost $1.2 million to build, rests on Laurel High's grounds and features brand new bleachers, a brand new press box, concession stand, locker rooms and indoor batting facilities. The players didn't have to wait long to experience their new home field.
They played an inter-squad scrimmage after the opening ceremonies. Head baseball coach Buddy Duke shared his joy in knowing his players can now walk directly from class to practice or to games, rather than having to drive to a "home" game.
While the fans and spectators on hand enjoyed the new setting for the first time, they'll have to wait until March 3 for their Golden Tornadoes' first game, when Laurel will host South Jones.
