Accident along I-59 slows traffic

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A two-vehicle accident along I-59 in Jones County sent one person to the hospital and closed a portion of the northbound lane.

An 18-wheeler headed northbound swerved and clipped a slow moving sedan near mile marker 87. The 18-wheeler spun and spilled a load of logs onto the road and crashed into the ditch.

Traffic was diverted onto Highway 11 while the logs were cleared from the road. One lane of the highway was reopened at around 4:30 p.m. Officials say it will take several hours to clean up the scene. Both lanes may be closed periodically.

The driver of the sedan was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured.

UPDATE: At 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, February 22, one lane of this same section of highway, near the 87 Mile Marker of I-59, will be closed while the remainder of the utility poles are removed from the median.
